It is a good idea to start planning and thinking what you might need to live independently, this may mean that you have purchase extra items. For example, you may need to consider purchasing extra bedding and cutlery to ensure that you have enough for home and university. This will ensure that you aren’t left without anything essential.

- Ear plugs – many students use loops
- ID – You will need this for verification and some college bars
- For your room:
- Pictures and posters to display on your wall, and white (not blue) tack to stick them up.
- Bed linen – this is not provided. Bring pillow, duvet, and associated sheets (basically all you are provided with is a mattress on a bed).
- Airer/hanger– to dry clothes with.
- An extension adapter – best if surge protected.
- Laundry bag – to carry laundry to the laundry!
- Hangers – to hang clothes up in your wardrobe.
- Clothes include sports clothes, trainers and if you want to join Hillwalking society walking boots.
- A suit can be helpful if you are planning on going to formals.
- Coats, jumpers and jackets – Durham can get cold!
- For your Kitchen (* if only for self-catered – most catered college pantrys don’t offer much more than microwave and kettle):
- Glasses and mugs
